Genomics to detect transmission of livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus from UK pigs in abattoirs during slaughter

  07 March 2024

Livestock-associated MRSA (LA-MRSA) transmission in pigs can increase occupational hazards and health concerns for workers. A study used genomics to identify LA-MRSA lineages in pig batches sent to slaughter and the distribution of clones. All abattoir isolates belonged to CC398 and were mainly spa type t011, with a common evolutionary origin with related lineages colonizing UK pigs. Transmission likely occurred on farm premises, during transportation, and within abattoirs through contact with contaminated surfaces.
